Dr. Kuhlmann earned
her master and doctoral degrees from the Minnesota School of Professional
Psychology, Argosy University-Twin Cities. She works in a variety of settings:
inpatient and outpatient hospitals, outpatient mental health clinics and
schools. She enjoys the diversity of experience this affords.
Dr. Kuhlmann was trained in a bio-psycho-social model which proposes that
psychological problems are often related to a combination of biological (e.g.
genetic, physiological), psychological (e.g. thoughts, behaviors) and social
(e.g. societal, cultural, media) factors. She believes in first establishing a
solid therapeutic alliance with individuals: a relationship in which individuals
feel respected, heard, acknowledged and understood. This is accomplished over
time by listening well, developing a thorough understanding of individuals’
backgrounds, responding efficiently to client concerns and acknowledging that
the client is the expert on his or her experiences. It is also accomplished by
creating a space that encourages openness, honesty, safety, mutual respect and
humor.
Dr. Kuhlmann strives to build on the many existing strengths of her clients and
to collaborate with individuals to bring about positive changes in behavior,
mood, relationships and self-concept.
Dr. Kuhlmann knows it can be difficult to reach out for help and respects the
courage it takes to start a therapeutic journey. She recognizes what an honor
and privilege it is to work with individuals during difficult times in their
lives.
